Mindfulness teaches us to describe thoughts and emotions, refrain from judging ourselves and others, increase self-awareness, and engage in the present moment. It introduces the idea that we have three different states of mind: one that is rational and logical, one that is emotional and reactive, and one that combines the wisdom inherent in the other two states and allows us to be self aware and effective in life. Mindfulness skills teach us to be aware of our thoughts and feelings in the present moment without necessarily acting upon them. They allow us to think and act in new ways and connect us to ourselves.
